What happens the first time you open Step

An overview of Step's first-run experience: default Space, sidebar, and the optional import flow.

1 min read

Step is designed to feel calm out of the box. The first launch creates one default Space, opens the sidebar, and offers to import data from your other browsers.

Your first Space

Step creates a single Space called "Default". Everything you open lands inside it. You can rename, recolor, or split it into multiple Spaces later from the sidebar.

The welcome onboarding

A short onboarding walks you through the sidebar, the URL bar, and the difference between temporary and saved tabs. You can replay it anytime from Settings → Onboarding.

Import data (optional)

Step detects Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Brave, Edge, and Arc on your Mac. Pick one and Step copies your bookmarks, history, passwords, and autofill data locally.

Privacy on first run

Step does not require an account, does not call home for telemetry on your browsing, and stores everything in a local SQLite file. You can verify this in Settings → Privacy.
