ABOUT

We're building the browser that remembers.

Step is built by a small team that got tired of losing browsing context every time the browser closed. Here's the story.

Why Step exists

Browsers were designed before knowledge work happened in twelve tabs at once. They keep URLs but not the shape of your thinking. Step is the browser that should have existed by now: one that respects the time you've spent reading, comparing, deciding. We're betting that what knowledge workers want most isn't AI in the URL bar, but a browser that remembers what they were doing.

What we believe

Local-first by default

Your data lives on your Mac in a SQLite file. No required account, no cloud sync, no telemetry on what you browse. We can't sell what we don't have.

Calm over clever

Step is meant to disappear into the work. No popups, no nudges, no AI suggesting what to do next. Just a sidebar that mirrors how you think.

Built on Chromium

We don't reinvent the engine. Your Chrome extensions work, your security patches arrive on time, the web renders correctly. We rebuild the shell, not the wheel.

Honest with users

Step is in private beta. It's not perfect. We tell you what works, what doesn't, and what's coming. Read the roadmap. Read the changelog. We have nothing to hide.
