Security

Check if a site's connection is secure

Read the lock icon next to the URL and what it does and doesn't promise.

The lock icon means the connection between your Mac and the site is encrypted. It does not mean the site is run by people you can trust.

Lock icon

Closed lock = HTTPS, encrypted. Open lock = HTTP, anyone on the network can read your request.

Triangle warning

Step shows a warning triangle when a certificate is invalid or the connection mixes secure and insecure resources. Don't ignore it.

Inspect the certificate

Click the lock → Connection is secure → Certificate. Step shows who issued the certificate and when it expires.
