What Step sends, and what it doesn't
A precise list of network calls Step makes by default.
1 min read
Step is local-first. Most browser actions happen on your machine. The list below covers every default network call Step makes.
Update checks
Step pings our update server every 4 hours to check for new builds. The request contains your version and OS but no identifier you didn't already share by downloading.
Search suggestions
When enabled, the URL bar sends in-progress queries to your default search engine for suggestions. Disable this in Settings → Search → Suggestions.
Safe Browsing
Step uses Google's Safe Browsing list, downloaded periodically. Lookups happen locally against the list, so URLs you visit aren't sent.
What Step does not send
Your browsing history, your bookmarks, your tabs, your Spaces, your downloads, your autofill, or your passwords. None of those leave your Mac unless you explicitly use a sync feature (Step has none today).
