Step's local-first architecture

Where Step stores your data and how to back it up.

1 min read

Every piece of state Step manages — Spaces, tabs, groups, splits, scroll positions, history, bookmarks, autofill — lives in a SQLite database on your Mac.

Where the data lives

~/Library/Application Support/Step Browser/. Inside, you'll find the SQLite database, the cache, and per-profile folders.

Back up your profile

Time Machine works out of the box. For a manual snapshot, copy the entire Step Browser folder while Step is closed.

Restore on a new Mac

Install Step on the new Mac, copy the Step Browser folder over, and launch. Everything is restored exactly: Spaces, bookmarks, passwords link to Keychain on the new machine.
