Step won't launch

Step fails to open at all. Common causes and fixes.

Steps

  1. Check macOS version

    Step needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later. Update macOS if needed.

  2. Force quit

    If you see Step in Activity Monitor, force quit it (⌥⌘Esc) and try again.

  3. Reset launch state

    Hold ⇧ while clicking Step. Step starts with no tabs and no extensions, which usually unblocks the issue.

  4. Reinstall

    If nothing works, drag Step to the Trash and reinstall from the latest .dmg. Your data in ~/Library/Application Support/Step Browser/ is preserved.
